musings from the week

most of my readers don't know my last name. it's the same as a NBA basketball player.

this picture has given me inspiration for another tattoo. we'll see if that happens.

happy hours are the best because of the activity of drinking after work, not the cheap drinks.

carving out my desired career trajectory takes hard work, patience and strategic thinking. lots of it.

unicyclists are badass.

watching the new season of the bachelorette is looking less appealing than reading Drew's weekly summaries. i'll still do both.

would i clean more if i lived in a smaller apartment?

i finished the entire fifty shades of grey series in a week. i can be an obsessive reader. what should i read next?

The Mindy Project

I adore Mindy Kaling. Lady is hilarious on The Office, as well as the movies she's been in, plus I read her book in a matter of days, all whilst laughing out loud at awkward times in public places. Welcome to my life.

While I dig the idea of all the new leading lady comedies popping up on TV (e.g. New Girl, Whitney), I haven't been able to get into any of them. I just recently found out that my girl Mindy is getting her own show, The Mindy Project. I'm not sold quite yet, but given my high-level girl crush, I will obviously tune in for the premiere. What do you guys think? Are you going to check it out?

Bad at Breakdancing

Fact. At least I think so. I can't say I've ever really tried to breakdance. But I assume I would look like this dude.

Also, Poorly Drawn Lines makes me snort obnoxiously. It is a black hole of hilarity. Perfect for a Tuesday, no?

Sunbathing

Meet my weekend companions: Jackson and Keira.

Turns out they like to soak up the rays. I joined them with my book and a glass of wine. Tough weekend, what can I say?

Deep Cleansing Breath

Aaaah... the weekend is so close. This has been a super busy week, and I'm looking forward to a short escape. I'm dog/house sitting this weekend, so I'll have the chance to take a step away from my usual everyday stresses. I've promised myself no working in my coffee shop this weekend! Aren't you proud? I'll be soaking up my free time and relaxing. Hopefully the dogs and I get out and trek through some park trails. What are you doing this weekend?

Sexism

When I grabbed lunch with a friend the other day, I was of out of sorts. It had already been a long morning, and it was, admittedly, nice to take a break from making decisions and providing answers to an endless stream of questions.

I was looking forward to a mindless break and let my mind relax. I should have known better, though, as this friend is always playfully antagonizing in my company. He was on a roll and I was nowhere near my sharpest. By the end of the lunch hour, he was making jokes about how hard it must be to be a woman, and it's a good thing he was around so that he could make decisions and explain things to me.

I used a number of expletives (remember, I wasn't on my game) and shook my head at his comments. We were both grinning, however, because this was obviously a joke. My intelligence, ability and know-how were never really in question.

It's strange to think about how much has changed in gender relations over the mere past few decades. I'm not going to blabber on about women's rights and roles in the world at the moment. I brought this story up to illustrate how such thoughts are joke-worthy in today's world (at least, that is, in my world), and it wasn't too long ago that men actually believed such things. Truthfully, both genders were guilty of such beliefs. So much so, that marketers capitalized on (what we know see as) the demeaning roles of women.
